The Force India driver will be racing for Porsche in the famous 24 hours race next week, and his presence at the race has prompted suggestions he could move to the World Endurance Championship.
But despite admitting that a sportscar future could happen in the longer term, he says his focus right now is on securing the most competitive seat he can in F1 for 2016.
When asked about a WEC future, Hulkenberg said: “It might be in the far future, but now my mindset is I have my two jobs.
“I do it and I will assess it after the experience and after the summer, what I want to do and what my options are. My head is still pretty much thinking in F1 terms and with an F1 future.”
Driver market speculation
Although Force India boss Vijay Mallya said last month that he is eager to retain Hulkenberg for 2016, it is understood there is no firm deal in place yet.
Hulkenberg has, however, declined to elaborate on what his contractual situation was for next year.
“That is a good question….deals are always something we don't talk about in great detail,” he said.
When asked how seriously he is looking at other options, with his name having been linked with the new Haas team, he said: “I think it depends what the alternatives are and what you can do.
“The driver market, this is the time of the year when it starts moving, and it is still too early to predict or say something. There is no need to worry or get in to a hurry now.”
