Six points in the championship

Tiago Monteiro entered the Formula One history books on Sunday after securing his first ever podium finish after just his ninth race in the series. On the famed Indianapolis circuit, the Jordan rookie secured third place after crossing the finish line behind the Ferraris of Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello, the Portuguese racer dominating his teammate for the entire 73 lap event as well as the two Minardi drivers.

Only teams fitted with Bridgestone rubber took part in Sunday afternoon's United States Grand Prix, the other 14 cars running on Michelin tyres returning to their respective garages after the formation lap due to a fault in the French rubber that made it impossible for the Clermont-Ferrand manufacturer to guarantee the drivers safety.

Thanks to his continued reliability and strong pace despite a heavy fuel load, Tiago Monteiro soon moved ahead of his rivals in his Toyota powered Jordan EJ15, being fellow Jordan driver Narain Karthikeyan and the two Minardi drivers. The Portuguese driver therefore secured six very valuable world championship points, the first of his F1 career, as well as securing his first ever podium finish. As a result, Tiago is ranked 13th in the drivers championship battle.

His effort was also great news for the Jordan team who will be well rewarded by the FOM in 2006 as a result. After suffering for the majority of the first half of the season, the Bridgestone equipped teams had the advantage this weekend, and as such it would have been wrong to give up the chance to race, effectively endorsing their rival's error.

"Obviously I know that this result has been obtained under very special conditions, but I cannot help myself from being happy because it was made possible thanks to a well balanced car and a good race strategy," Tiago explained. "This is my first podium and my first points in Formula One and it is necessary to benefit from occasions that arise. This podium is dedicated to my family, my team, my friends and my sponsors. I am grateful to them for believing in me."

Tiago Monteiro will shakedown the new EJ15B in Barcelona this Thursday.
