Norbert Haug, Mercedes-Benz Chief of Motorsport, thinks that rivals Ferrari will be the favourite to win the championship again this year. Haug said that the Maranello marque will be the one to beat.

"Ferrari is the favourite for the 2002 championship," he commented "They are expected to build the fastest and most reliable car."

The recently launched F2002 got off to a good start at it's first run in Fiorano when Michael Schumacher put the car through it's paces -- setting a new lap record at the circuit. Haug claims that McLaren are not behind Ferrari in development and that recent testing in Barcelona and Valencia showed promising results. He also refuted claims that the new Benz engine was not producing the expected results; the engine features evolutionary design and has changed from a 72 degree angle to a 90 degree angle in an effort to lower the centre of gravity.

"I am sure that we have gone in the correct direction," Haug said, "We are continuously working to improve the engine. We completed approximately 2,100 kilometres in testing last week; that is a daily average of a Grand Prix distance. We obtained good times."
