World champion Lewis Hamilton has welcomed the challenge from Red Bull at the Hungaroring after its strong form in free practice – but warned that his car is “feeling good” this weekend.
When told that both of the Red Bulls – driven by Daniil Kvyat and Daniel Ricciardo – had outpaced his teammate Nico Rosberg, Hamilton said he is glad of the extra competition.
“That’s good, the more the merrier – the more battle we have, the better,” said Hamilton. “The Red Bulls look like they have been relatively quick today.
"We’re looking pretty good at the moment. Our car is feeling good this weekend.”
Hamilton said the main issue he’d had to deal with on Friday was the extreme heat as track temperatures soared well over 50C.
“It was actually really good fun, just incredibly hot – I can’t express quite how hot it is,” he said. “It feels hotter than a sauna out there. I think everyone is having difficulties with it, it’s definitely not easy but I like it when it’s challenging. I think I lost about a kilo [in sweat] in that session alone.”
Hamilton was also asked if he’d physically practiced any starts to the new procedure that will come in for the next round at Spa-Francorchamps.
He replied: “No, we haven’t practiced any of the starts yet, but in the simulator last week we practiced, well I practiced, Nico didn’t go in. I’ve practiced the sequence and everything. It didn’t seem to be a problem.”
