Hamilton trusts Mercedes to make right call on team orders

Lewis Hamilton hasn't asked Mercedes for the support of team mate Valtteri Bottas, but he trusts that the team will eventually make a call should it be logical to back one driver in the title battle.

Team boss Toto Wolff admitted at Spa that Mercedes may consider each situation as it comes as it tries to maximise its chances in both world championships.

Hamilton has always insisted that he doesn't want to be given priority over his teammate, but he acknowledges that the situation may arise.

"I personally have not spoken to the team, requesting it or demanding it," said Hamilton. "That's not really my job. My job is to arrive and do the best job I can. That's also not how I like to operate.

"You'd hope that at some stage the team makes a decision on their own, and I think we've got good people leading the team, people like Niki and Toto, who hopefully will know at the right point what is best for the team.

"This year I've felt I've had all the support I've needed."

Hamilton said he won't know how he will feel if he is given number one status, having never been in that situation before.

"I don't know, it would be an unusual thing for me. I think we've all had an opinion about how Ferrari have done their business over the years, but regardless they've gone on to be one of the most successful teams, and it just goes over your head.

"The situation that I've been in for many years, where it's not like it is at Ferrari, has proven to be very powerful, and championships have been lost due to that.

"When I joined this team and every team I've driven for I've asked for an equal opportunity, and I like to make the difference myself.

"As you know this is a sport that the team play a large part in that, there's only so much difference you can make. For Sebastian it's a little bit easier for him in the battle that he's had.

"I can't honestly tell you it would feel. If and when it happens, I'll let you know."
