Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg should have tried harder to win the Chinese Grand Prix, according to world champion Lewis Hamilton.

Rosberg, who finished second behind Hamilton in the race, complained afterwards that Hamilton had driven too slowly, compromising his own chances of victory.

Although Mercedes said the drivers had cleared the air after the event, and Rosberg described a team meeting as "constructive", Hamilton said on Tuesday his German teammate was not trying hard enough during the race.

"Nico didn't try," Hamilton was quoted as saying by British media.

"They said maybe he was just comfortable with second and I said 'well, that's the difference between us. I want to win always'.

"And I would have done everything to get past. Or at least pushed for three laps. He wasn't quick enough.

"I want the guy to be up my arse if he's got the pace, up my arse and putting pressure on me. And if I can't defend it, you lose it."

The Briton, who was last beaten by Rosberg in last year's Brazilian Grand Prix, added that he is mentally stronger than his rival.

"I've always said he is really strong mentally. But I'd like to think I'm stronger this year," he said.
