Lewis Hamilton says that problems getting his brakes up to temperature were to blame for the moment where he nearly hit the safety car at the start of the British Grand Prix.

The torrential downpour prior to the start of the Silverstone race meant that race control opted for a safety car start, with the pack not being released until the start of the sixth lap.

Prior to that, Hamilton came close to hitting the safety car at Copse as he appeared to outbrake himself, having to run off track on the inside of the right-hander and narrowly avoiding clipping the right-rear of the Mercedes-AMG GT.

The Briton, who went on to win the race, explained that brake troubles were to blame for the mishap, as the slow pace of the safety car prevented him from getting them up to temperature.

"I had glazed my rear brakes and they were low on temperatures," said Hamilton. "I was trying to pick up them, but the safety car was so slow, you cannot imagine.

"Our car is so fast, and you cannot see that well behind the safety car, I braked and the thing wasn't stopping, so I nearly hit the safety car.

"It is a first, fortunately I didn't."

Safety car not needed

Hamilton added that, in his opinion, the safety car start wasn't necessary at all, as he felt there was left standing water than when he took his first Silverstone win back in 2008.

"I think we could have started on the grid," said the reigning champion. "There were wet patches all over the place, but that is what racing is about.

"We stayed out [behind the safety car] far too long, it was [time to switch to] intermediates by the time they let us go.

"There was more water on track in 2008 when we started from the grid."
