The race strategy was based on a single pit-stop. Wurz earned 2 points in his home grand prix. Fisichella was forced to retire due to engine failure 3 laps from the end of the race when he was in 7th position.
Alexander Wurz : 7 th
"I did a good start and then I had to defend my position against Hill quite hard at the beginning. I was sliding quite a bit on my first set of tyres and this improved a bit with the second set. It was a tough race with a lot of battles and seventh is a frustrating finishing position as we are just outside of the points."
Giancarlo Fisichella : retired on lap 7
"I was fighting with Alexander, who made a fantastic start and whilst trying to overtake him I went off the track. I had to stop in the pits to change the nose. I was going faster than Wurz and I wanted to overtake him at all costs so as to stay close to the front-runners. Alexander certainly didn’t help me, but I cannot complain seeing as we weren’t under any team obligations. When I got back out on the track I was running really fast, on the same lap times as those at the front, but unfortunately my front suspension broke probably because of when I had gone off the track earlier on."
Rocco Benetton :
"This is another difficult race and the culmination of a hard weekend. We came here with different expectations and we didn’t succeed in getting the best out of the cars. The car performed very differently each day, it was good on Friday and Sunday and terrible on Saturday. Unfortunately there was a misunderstanding between the drivers and Giancarlo had to retire when he was in a good position to be competitive in the race. Alexander flat-spotted the tyres and this compromised his race too. We will keep on fighting to get the results we know we merit."
