George Russell edges closer to new Mercedes F1 deal
Russell has impressed so far in F1 2025, which could lead to a Mercedes contract extension sooner than later

George Russell’s strong start to the 2025 Formula 1 season appears to be paying off both on and off the track, as talks over a new Mercedes contract move forward.
Russell currently sits fourth in the drivers’ championship after the opening four rounds, just 14 points behind leader Lando Norris. His campaign has included three podium finishes in four races, including a second place in Bahrain, underlining a strong start to the season.
That form has strengthened his position in ongoing negotiations with Mercedes, as the team looks to secure him on a new deal. According to paddock sources, Russell is expected to sign a two-year extension with an option for 2028. The agreement is believed to be worth around $30 million per season.
Last year, Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff showed interest in pairing Russell with Max Verstappen, but that stance appears to have changed. Wolff is now understood to be satisfied with the current line-up, as Russell continues to deliver consistent results and rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli is adapting quickly to life in Formula 1.
Since Lewis Hamilton’s departure, Russell has stepped into the de facto team leader role at Mercedes. Wolff, in turn, is preparing to reflect that status in the new contract, which would also cost significantly less than any potential move for Verstappen.

Russell's Bahrain drive was particularly impressive. After overtaking Charles Leclerc at the start, Russell remained within range of race leader Oscar Piastri while keeping Norris at bay.
That task became more complicated due to a series of technical issues. Russell’s car experienced intermittent electronic failures, starting with a loss of data on his dashboard.
On top of that, from lap 46 Russell was affected by a brake-by-wire malfunction that caused the required brake pressure to fluctuate unpredictably. He reported that the force needed on the pedal changed constantly, making it difficult to maintain consistent braking and increasing the risk of lock-ups. The issue forced him to adjust his driving lap by lap, particularly through the heavy braking zones in the final part of the race.
Despite the complications, Russell managed to fend off Norris and secure second place under the chequered flag.
