Marc Gene joins the World Series by Nissan:
"I want to fight for victory again"
Montmelo, 3rd March 2003 Marc Gene has joined the World Series by Nissan with the Spanish team Adrian Campos Motorsport. But the Spaniard will continue his role as the official test driver with BMW.WilliamsF1. The World Series by Nissan are just starting its second Season, and they have been credited as the most successful series in Europe before stepping in Formula 1. Gene is facing a new challenge in his racing career, but he won't be alone. His former race engineer in Minardi, the Frenchman Jean Francois Sinteff (DT at Adrian Campos Motorsport) and Adrian himself, will be helping the Spaniard to achieve his goal. Being a serious candidate for the Title's victory.
Why have you decided to join the World Series by Nissan?
"I was happy to compete in a real high-level Series, although my dream still is to race in Formula One. Actually, I was hoping to race in Formula One after two years testing, but I this opportunity never came. Nowadays, the World Series by Nissan is the most successful Series before F-1. I saw the cars in Jarama last year and I was so impressed about the technical level and the look, as well as the level of the Teams."
How did the BMW WilliamsF1 Team react to this new situation?
"I wanted to share my decision with Frank Williams and Mario Theissen, I think that they have no objection to this. Obviously, if someone it's got a busy calendar in Formula One, that's me! For this reason, it's very important not to find incompatibilities with my role as a test driver with Williams, and my new role as a competition driver in the World Series. I think that my experience in Formula One will help the lack of testing in the World Series by Nissan."
Back in Campos Motorsport, that is talk about your first victory in '98.
"Actually, I stepped in Formula One thanks to Adrian and the Series promoters -- it's quite funny to be again involved with them. Adrian Campos is someone who I can trust a lot, specially in this new challenge."
Did you request any special condition?
"Well, let's say that the Team's structure has completely reviewed. We haven't got ant problem in investing all the necessary in some critical points, in order to improve. I'm happy to work with Jean Francois Sinteff, my former race engineer in Minardi."
How do you feel to be again in the starting grid? Specially in Spain, as the Series will quick off in El Jarama the next 30th of March.
"Ricardo Zonta won the first edition. After a while, the Spanish drivers have an option to take a victory. I keep a very grateful memory of the Spanish supporters when I won the Series in 1998. For me, this is a very special moment. To enter the World Series is a personal challenge, nobody obliges me to take this responsibility."
When you won back in ^Ì98, did you ever expect such an evolution in this Series?
"Of course not! I didn't even expect to enter in Formula One so early! Again, when the car was presented in Parma in 2001, nobody thought that the World Series by Nissan could became a professional championship where the Formula One are fighting to get a seat!"
Today Marc Gene and Santi Porteiro (brilliant winner of the Formula Nissan 2000), are taking part in a private testing with their team at the Circuit of Catalunya. Tonight, Marc Gene will jump in a plane to where the 2003 Formula One Championship starts the next 9th of March. The next 11th of March, Gene and Porteiro will be back in action during the second official Pre-Season tests that will take place at El Jarama (Madrid).
