Schumacher was behind Trulli's Renault in the Australian GP and unable to find a way past until the Italian spun off. Afterwards the Ferrari driver was critical of Trulli, saying his on track actions were 'fair, I suppose, but not appropriate.'

Why Schumacher thought Trulli defending his position when racing was not appropriate is not very clear and Gascoyne isn't at all happy about it: "His comments about Jarno defending his position were pathetic and inappropriate," he said. "Everyone wants to see racing and there were two guys racing for position. Michael had the better car and it's up to him to pass."

Trulli spun out from his second position which Renault claim was casued by his car hiting a patch of oil. "He was getting off line racing with Michael, so his line through the first chicane was variable because he was having to take different lines into the corner to defend his position. We went and watched it from Michael's in-car camera, and you can see the oil every lap. It's just that Jarno hit it that lap because he was slightly off line." Gascoyne explained.
