The tragedy that struck Asia on December 26th shocked the whole world and donations are being given to help the victims of the tsunami disaster from both individuals and companies in Formula One. Michael Schumacher donated $10 million to the appeal; one of his bodyguards died in Thailand.

"Our New Year's Eve was quiet this time due to the catastrophic events that occurred in Asia," said Schumacher. "What happened to all those people is incomprehensibly tragic and it's impossible not to keep thinking about it. Our thoughts are with them, and we hope that they will be spared further disastrous events."

Tyre manufacturer Bridgestone has donated $900,000 to the fund and Toyota has contributed the same amount. Ferrari team sponsor Vodafone has donated £1 million. Global pledges have exceeded $3 billion but although aid is starting to get through, transport problems in the aftermath of the disaster are hampering efforts to reach some of the worst hit regions.
