Giancarlo Fisichella may be swapping a Jordan for a Sauber in 2004 but in the mean time he will take to the wheel of an Alfa Romeo touring car. The Italian will race at Monza in the European Touring Car Championship next weekend in a one-off arrangement with Alfa's Autodelta team.

Fisichella is no stranger to touring cars, having raced in the DTM (German Touring Cars) in 1995 and has driven for Alfa Romeo before, in the International category. Autodelta fields five cars: Gabriele Tarquini is gunning for the championship and alongside him and Fisichella will be James Thompson, Nicola Larini and Roberto Colciago.

Also at Monza, Alex Zanardi will make his race return in the same event. Zanardi lost both legs in a huge accident at Lausitz in Germany in 2001 while in the CART series and the Italian has since amazed the racing world by being determined to compete again.

Zanardi will be the third driver in the BMW Italy-Spain squad and the 320i model has been especially adapted for him, with accelerator on the steering wheel and clutch on the gearshift.
