First in-season F1 test kicks off at Barcelona

Formula 1 returned to action on Tuesday morning, just two days after the Spanish Grand Prix, as testing kicked off at Barcelona.

The two-day test is the first of two in-season tests that will take place this year. The second will be hosted at the Red Bull Ring after the Austrian Grand Prix in June.

Only half the teams will be running their regular racing drivers today, with Spanish GP winner Nico Rosberg carrying out the work for Mercedes.

Ferrari will run Italian Raffaele Marciello, who will switch to the cockpit of the Sauber for the second day of running. Esteban Gutierrez will get his first Ferrari test on Wednesday.

Pascal Wehrlein was also scheduled to drive for two teams, testing for Force India today and for Mercedes tomorrow. However, the German was feeling unwell and it was Nick Yelloly driving the Force India instead.

Formula 3 European champion Esteban Ocon will drive the Force India on the second day.

Pierre Gasly will also drive two different cars, first in the Toro Rosso cockpit and tomorrow driving the Red Bull.

Brazilian Felipe Massa will be at the wheel of the Williams before handing it over to test driver Alex Lynn for the second day.

At Red Bull, Daniil Kvyat will try to make progress for the team after yet another difficult race on Sunday.

McLaren will also be hoping for progress after a poor grand prix weekend. The man in charge of testing duties today will be Oliver Turvey, before Jenson Button takes over on Wednesday.

Race drivers Pastor Maldonado and Marcus Ericsson will be in charge of testing for Lotus and Sauber respectively today.
