The Jordan team opted not to work specifically for a good performance in qualifying during the opening day of practice, the Silverstone based squad instead choosing to concentrate on their tyre choice and set up of the EJ15 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Meanwhile, Minardi chose the opposite direction, as they did in Monaco, leaving the two Jordan Toyota drivers at the bottom of the timesheets.
"The track was slippery in the first session and we had to learn the layout while making sure not to make an error, as well as working like a navvy on the adjustments of the EJ15," explained Jordan's Portuguese driver Tiago Monteiro.
"Given that I have never run here before, to finish the first sessions less than 3 seconds off the best time of the day was not a bad performance. We carried out some modifications in the second session, but the car did not react favorably to them and this hindered our progress."
Tiago's objective is however, like always, is to prepare for Sunday's race, the only thing that really matters in the long run...
"We will be prepared for the race, with a certain amount of fuel on board, so the car will be rather heavy. We will have a lot on board for Saturday as well, for the two free practice sessions and qualifying. It will be necessary that we test different set ups."
But is Minardi dominating them? This is not a source of concern for Tiago!
"Robert Doornbos completed his runs with 15 litres of fuel and new tyres, the same conditions Minardi had, and he was much faster than they were. Meanwhile, we worked seriously on the aspects of the race, and will therefore approach qualifying in the same frame of mind. The most important appointment here this weekend is not practice, it's the race!"
