Ferrari update plan lifts Vettel's confidence
Sebastian Vettel believes improvements Ferrari has planned for its car mean the team can still salvage something from this season, despite more disappointment at the Singapore Grand Prix.
The German's hopes of challenging for a podium finish at the Marina Bay circuit last weekend were dashed by a rear-suspension problem in qualifying that left him at the back of the grid.
And although he recovered brilliantly to finish fifth, it was not the podium finish nor the victory challenge that he had hoped for heading into the weekend.
But Red Bull remains only 15 points ahead in the constructors' championship and, with Ferrari still planning some updates for its 2016 challenger, Vettel believes that will be further opportunities to fight for a good result.
"I think if we get everything right [it can happen]," explained Vettel. "We know we have a strong package for sure.
"Some races we didn't deliver all we could - some were up to us, and some because of stuff that happened. But for sure it didn't end up so far the way we wanted, and we are not where we wanted to be.
"I think we believe in ourselves. For sure we are not entirely where we want to be in terms of raw pace, sometimes better or sometimes worse, but at tracks like Singapore it is generally more close.
"We expected to be competitive, and then there is always a chance to win or fight for a solid podium. Unfortunately it didn't turn out for both of us.
"But we have confidence. There are some bits coming still. We are here to fight and that is what we are going to do."
Team principal Maurizio Arrivabene declined to reveal what kind of updates the team planned to bring over the remainder of the campaign, but said that everyone at the outfit was determined to do better.
"We have six races now to go and if we want to be second in constructors' [championship] of course we need to improve, that is normal," he said. "This is what we are going to do."
