According to press reports, Alain Prost has signed a deal with Ferrari to utilize customer versions of the Italian team's engines next year.

With Prost's and Peugeot's acrimonious relationship coming to an end at the close of the season, Prost had been looking for an alternative engine supplier. Ferrari, which is already supplying Sauber with customer engines -- rebadged as "Petronas V10" -- has agreed to provide its former star driver with that critical element of F1 success.

In fact, Prost asked Ferrari management to act as its representative at the meeting of Formula One teams and FIA at Heathrow last week.

With the arrival of the Ferrari engines, and the departure of Nick Heidfeld to Sauber, it also looks like Pedro Paulo Diniz will make the trip across the border in the other direction.

"There is a lot of potential at Prost," said Diniz. "With the Ferrari engines, they should make a good step forward in 2001."

Diniz would likely bring major sponsorship to the French team, estimated to be on the order of US$8.5 million -- a significant contribution toward funding the expected US$24M/year cost of the Ferrari engines.
