Sunny weather signaled the start of first free practice for the Spanish Grand Prix with track temperature around 21C. Takuma Sato was the first man on track for Jordan, followed by the Jaguar of Eddie Irvine but Sato didn't get very far: the Jordan slowed to a halt within a few metres. Alex Yoong and Allan McNish started the times rolling, Yoong's Minardi team mate Mark Webber also setting an early time.

The Saubers of Felipe Massa and Nick Heidfeld showed early form as did Arrows, Heinz-Harald Frentzen had a spin at Repsol but managed to go second fastest. Yoong went into the gravel then the Ferraris took to the track after about twenty five minutes, Barrichello taking the top slot and immediately surrendering it to Michael Schumacher. The German set a 1:20.681 for the fastest time half way through the session.

Kimi Raikkonen went into fourth for McLaren, team mate Coulthard had yet to set a time while the Williams' seemed off the pace just outside the top ten. When Coulthard finally went out he went wide at turn 12 but managed to set seventh fastest. Yoong spun again and the yellow flags came out but the session wasn't overly disrupted. Massa had a slight off in the final minutes and the Ferraris remained dominant. Final top six classification: M. Schumacher, Barrichello, Massa, Raikkonen, Trulli, Frentzen.
