Fernando Alonso says: "I'm the fastest overall driver in Formula 1" - do you agree?

Fernando Alonso believes that he is the best overall driver currently competing in Formula 1 and says he could beat any competition from his rivals if they all used the same equipment.

The McLaren driver, who missed the Bahrain Grand Prix as a result of the injuries he sustained in a crash during the season-opening Australian Grand Prix, told Martin Brundle in a Sky Sports F1 interview that although he does not consider himself to be the best at individual elements of the sport, he feels he is the most complete driver in F1.

Fernando Alonso

He said: "I always feel confident about beating anyone. I don't believe that I'm better than anyone on pure speed in qualifying; I don't think I'm better than anyone in wet conditions, dry conditions, qualifying [or the] race.

“But if you put me in the same car, in the same moment and same track as anyone. I think that I will beat them. Maybe I'm not best of all sections, but overall I will beat them."

The interview followed a confrontation in Bahrain between the Spaniard and Sky's Johnnie Herbert, who has claimed that the double world champion should retire. Alonso also revealed that he had viewed the crash much more slowly from the cockpit of his McLaren in Melbourne than it looked in the dramatic TV images and explained that he felt safe throughout the impact due to the safety features on modern F1 cars.

He said: “Everything happened, not in slow motion, but when you see the images, it does not seem the same in the car. Everything feels slower and you know, more-or-less, where you are in every moment in every second. It’s not that you are lost [as] you feel everything.

“More-or-less you are relaxed because the cars are safe and you just want everything to stop, to get out of the car because you are unhurt. I thought I would try to [get] out, because I had the space to just [get] out.”

Fernando Alonso

The Spaniard climbed out of his wrecked MP4-31 in Melbourne’s Turn 3 gravel trap and described how his first adrenaline-fueled thoughts were of restarting the race in repaired or spare car, which are no longer permitted by the regulations.

He said: “I was thinking, “if they recover the car and they go to the pitlane because it’s a red flag [can I] go out again?’ That was my initial feeling: ‘the damage is not enough’ or ‘is there a third car I can jump in?’

“Stupid thoughts that you have in that moment because there are no other cars and there are no possible repairs to that one, is the first thing that comes to your mind.”

XPB.cc Stoffel Vandoorne

McLaren’s reserve driver, Stoffel Vandoorne, replaced Alonso for the Bahrain Grand Prix but the 34-year-old insisted he had wanted to race in the second Grand Prix of the season.

When asked if it was true he had performed press-ups for the FIA’s medical team in Bahrain, Alonso confirmed that he had and described his frustration at being prevented from racing.

He said: “I said in the press conference that I was disappointed because I was. In reality I flew to Bahrain because I wanted to race.”

Alonso is currently 18th in the drivers’ championship and his best (and only) race finish of the season came last weekend in China, where he ended up 12th.

McLaren still only has a single world championship point so far this season, which was scored by Vandoorne in the Bahrain race.
