Fascinating facts from Renault

The Renault F1 Team's Spanish driver Fernando Alonso set the fourth-fastest time in qualifying yesterday, just one thousandth of a second off Michael Schumacher.

At the end of an almost-perfect lap, Fernando was credited with a time of 1:16.048. Unfortunately, when the World Champion's Ferrari broke the beam a few minutes later, he took third position on the grid with a single timed lap of 1:16.047...!

Fernando's R23 crossed the timing beam at a speed of 267.1km/h. At that speed, the gap separating him from Michael Schumacher represents just 7.4cm. And because 10kg of fuel corresponds to a 0.25s handicap at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, the Renault F1 Team engineers concluded that this tiny gap equated to less than 40 grams extra weight in the car.

"We are very pleased with our result in qualifying," smiled Pat Symonds, Executive Director of Engineering. "To make sure our consciences were clear, we had to ask Fernando if he had taken his watch off before qualifying. He said yes, so we can't have any regrets...!"
