F1 Testing: Wehrlein on Top, Fuoco Crashes Ferrari, Williams raise eyebrows

Mercedes reserve driver Pascal Wehrlein edged Esteban Ocon for top spot on the rain delayed first day of testing at Red Bull Ring.

Wehrlein, who was swapped to Tuesday with Nico Rosberg now set to take over the car on Wednesday, posted a time just under two tenths of a second ahead of Force India's Ocon while GP3 racer Antonio Ocon crashed on F1 test debut with Ferrari.

The rain delayed session only really got under way in the afternoon in Austria as torrential rain limited just a couple of the drivers to single exploratory laps in the morning before the heavens opened bringing out red flags.

As the bad weather receded the organisers made the decision to extend the afternoon session by two hours rather than opt for running on Thursday as had been suggested.

When the cars did take to the track after lunch, GP2 star Stoffel Vandoorne was first to venture out for McLaren on a still wet Red Bull Ring surface.

Ocon and Fuoco followed soon after and, as track conditions quickly improved, a switch to intermediate tyres heralded an increase in on track activity.

With only Manor F1 missing the test, many of the teams have brought test drivers to the final in season test, though only Ferrari and Force India are the only teams not using either of their 2015 race drivers this week.

Fuoco, second in last weekend's GP3 feature race for Carlin Motorsport, accumulated plenty of mileage on his Ferrari debut but spun on entry to turn one, hitting the wall and calling an early halt to the team's running for the day.

Still his best lap was good enough for fourth as another flurry of rain doused the track. Further dry running towards the end failed to yield any improvement in times.

Max Verstappen ended the day with the biggest lap total and third fastest time behind Wehrlein and Ocon while Romain Grosjean was fifth for Lotus with just 45 laps on the board ahead of tomorrow's hand over to Jolyon Palmer.

DAMS GP2 racer Pierre Gasly ended the day sixth for Red Bull, less than a tenth of a second faster than Ferrari Academy member Rafaelle Marciello in the Sauber.

Vandoorne with 76 laps on the board ended the day eighth for McLaren Honda ahead of Susie Wolff's Williams, the Scot managing the lowest total of just 37 laps during the day. Wolff will hand over test duties to Valtteri Bottas for tomorrow's running.

Williams raised some eyebrows with a winglet on Susie Wolff's car which on the face of it, would not be allowed in a race weekend under current regulations. The team is experimenting with rear downforce levels clearly, an area where it still gives something away to Mercedes.

Esteban Guttierez takes over for Ferrari while Daniel Ricciardo drives for Red Bull, Fernando Alonso for McLaren and  Wehrlein will be able to make an interesting comparison between Mercedes and Force India as he takes over from Ocon who drove the B-Spec VJM08 with a new nose today.

DTM driver Marco Wittmann will be given a first F1 test outing for Toro Rosso while Felipe Nasr is back in harness for Sauber on the second and final day of running.
