Kimi Raikkonen finished 10th for Team RED BULL SAUBER PETRONAS in today's European Grand Prix, but Nick Heidfeld's car was withdrawn for safety reasons on the 54th lap after a clash with Jean Alesi.
Driver (Chassis) Morning Warm-up Race
Heidfeld (C20-05) 1:19.732s, 9th Retired lap 54 Raikkonen (C20-06) 1:19.787s, 10th 10th Spare: (C20-01)
Nick Heidfeld: "I made a good start, passing one of the Jordans, but then got very close to Kimi in the first corner when I had to brake to avoid the other Jordan. But it was okay, it's always close there. I was able to pass Kimi coming out of the final corner at the end of that lap and the car felt fine initially in eighth place. I was following Barrichello thinking, 'This is looking good.' But later the tyres began to blister and the problem was worse with my second set, when the car was really oversteering. When I was fighting with Jean Alesi we touched, and as the car began handling oddly I came in and we discovered that the incident had damaged a driveshaft, so I had to retire."
Kimi Raikkonen: "The car felt good in the first part of the race and my second set of tyres was better than the first, but I still had some blisters so I couldn't drive as quickly as I wanted to. Towards the end I wasn't too worried about the pressure from Alesi, so long as I protected the inside line to the corners. In the end he braked too late and spun off, so I was okay."
Peter Sauber (Team Principal): "Our finishing position was not good enough today. It was not possible for us to follow the two Jaguars, but we do not know yet if this was because of the performance of our tyres. On a positive note, we have retained our fourth place in the Constructors' Championship."
