ANOTHER SOLID PERFORMANCE
KL Minardi Asiatech enjoyed another day of steady progress today at the Nurburgring as the Faenza team prepares for tomorrow's Grand Prix of Europe. Drivers Mark Webber and Alex Yoong continued to work on fine-tuning the performance of their cars during the course of this morning's two practice sessions. Sensationally, Webber, whose car was fitted with a new, slightly more efficient rear wing, recorded the 14th fastest lap in the closing minutes of the second session.
Both drivers then improved their times usefully in qualifying, Yoong doing a particularly creditable job by finding nearly a second in the course of his four runs. The weather around the Nurburgring is notoriously unpredictable, and both KL Minardi Asiatech drivers will be hoping that factor, combined with reliability and a bit of luck, will result in a top-10 finish in tomorrow's race.
"We did some useful work on the car this morning and that was reflected in our best lap time. As ever with Grand Prix weekends, however, you have to wait until qualifying to see how much more the other teams may have in reserve. I would also have liked to get a little more out of myself this afternoon - I was perhaps trying just a bit too hard in places. Overall, though, it was a good session, I learned a lot, and now we'll aim to have a strong race tomorrow."
"We improved the car from yesterday and had a smooth qualifying session this afternoon, steadily improving on our lap times from the morning practice. My seat proved a little uncomfortable during the qualifying runs, so we'll have a look at that and try to improve it, but otherwise, there's nothing particularly significant to mention. I'm feeling positive for tomorrow's race."
PAUL STODDART, Team Principal
"It has been a day of slightly mixed fortunes for the KL Minardi Asiatech team here at the Nurburgring. Having set a scintillating, 14th-fastest time in the second of this morning's practice sessions, Mark further reduced his lap time in qualifying, but didn't pick up as many positions as we thought he might. Alex did a great job to improve his times very respectably and qualified comfortably for the race. The team and drivers look forward to tomorrow's Grand Prix at a track where anything can happen. A top-10 finish is definitely possible."
