Katayama's Tyrrell lasted only four laps when his Yamaha engine blew just after completing the third lap. This was the major story of the day because on that fourth lap, he left a trail of oil all 'round the circuit, denying many to make a serious run for the overnight pole.

Heinz-Harald Frentzen could have had the provisional pole if it weren't for Damon Hill, who was just able to beat Frentzen's time on the greasy circuit. Ukyo's Yamaha was one of the new spec variation.

Peugeot claim to have a new spec engine worth a few tenths of a second, or as they put it, "10 horsepower" more than the last version. Mika was second in the morning but said the handling went away in the afternoon.
