The West McLaren Mercedes team finished today’s Free Practice for Sunday’s Warsteiner European Grand Prix with Mika Hakkinen setting the third fastest time and David close behind in fourth. Mika’s time was 1:20.300 while David posted 1:20.507. Both drivers completed 25 laps.

MIKA HAKKINEN
‘We kept on improving the car throughout today’s two practice sessions. However there is still some work left before we achieve the balance I would like. We can definitely improve the car in certain sectors of the track. The changing weather conditions didn’t affect us apart from the loss of a bit of track time.’

DAVID COULTHARD
‘We went through a normal Free Practice testing programme and evaluated different set-ups. I’m confident that we are able to go quicker in tomorrow’s qualifying. I did spin off at the Chicane before the last corner early in the second session but no damage was done.’

RON DENNIS
‘A satisfactory day where we experienced no mechanical problems and made step by step progress to find a good race set-up.’

NORBERT HAUG
‘Our Nürburgring can certainly compete with Easter weekend at Silverstone in terms of changing weather conditions. That’s why we were quite surprised to find the track mainly dry in both sessions. Less than six tenths of a second between Mika in third and Rubens Barrichello in 14th place indicate how competitive this formula is.’
