Warsteiner Grand Prix of Europe - Friday Free Practice
McLaren Mercedes duo again lead practice
Mika Hakkinen and David Coulthard topped the time sheets at the end of today's practice session in a repeat of the Friday result two weeks ago in Canada, but this time in front of engine partner Mercedes' home crowd. Hakkinen's fastest lap, a 1:16.408, was the best of the afternoon, with Coulthard following with a 1:16.579, fractionally less than a second faster than his pole position time at the Nurburgring last year. Montreal winner Ralf Schumacher was third quickest, followed by his brother Michael in the Ferrari. Rubens Barrichello was fifth fastest.
Adrian Newey - Technical Director - West McLaren Mercedes"
A reasonably trouble-free day, trying both the tyre compounds and evaluating them. The track conditions were reasonably consistent. The temperature did not appear to change things too much, however the wind speed increased this afternoon and that was probably a more influential factor. We will have to see what everyone else is doing before we can say anything about qualifying tomorrow."
Ross Brawn - Technical Director - Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro
"We managed to do a good comparison with the two tyre types and we will make a decision tonight on that. We had a small problem with Rubens' car but it was nothing serious, nothing to worry about. Overall it was a good day."
Hisao Suganuma - Technical Manager - Bridgestone Motorsport
"As is normal for a Friday, all our teams tried both the new compounds we have brought to this grand prix. The increase in temperature did not make much difference and our drivers did not suffer too badly from the understeer we predicted there might be here. Once we have considered the data from today we will have a better idea of which will be the right tyre to use for the rest of the weekend." <pre> Temperatures Air Track Weather Morning 11-12C 13-16C Cloudy Afternoon 15-18C 24-27C Sunny, partly cloudy
