McLaren team principal Rond Dennis has praised David Coulthard's high performance level in 2002 in the face of competition from team mate Kimi Raikkonen. Jaguar boss Niki Lauda recently suggested Coulthard had been outshone by Raikkonen this season and would struggle to keep up with the young Finn next year. Dennis thinks the Scot has responded to Raikkonen's efforts with composure.

"There is no doubt Kimi is developing into an outstanding Formula One competitor with a great future," he told the BBC. "By the same token David has responded to his presence in the team with precisely the balance that we would have expected from someone so seasoned in the ways of F1."

"It would have been disappointing if he had been comfortable with sometimes being out-qualified by his team-mate. But he has certainly not been destabilised in any way by Kimi's presence. Under such circumstances it would have been easy for an experienced driver to lose his focus. But David has remained extremely composed all season and continued to perform to his customary high level."

Coulthard was outqualified ten to seven by Raikkonen in 2002 but managed to remain ahead of the Finn in the Driver's championship. If Raikkonen hadn't suffered quite so many engine failures it may have been a different story. Raikkonen has impressed many this year with his mature performances so even with his advantage of experience, Coulthard can't afford to rest on his laurels.
