McLaren team principal Ron Dennis has confirmed that Mika Hakkinen is still under contract to the team for 2003 and will decide his future later this season. Hakkinen recently parted company with long-time manager Keke Rosberg which gave rise to speculation that the Finn was ready to quit F1 for good -- Hakkinen decided to take a year's sabatical at the end of last season, saying he just needed a break but would be back.

Dennis explained that with David Coulthard and Kimi Raikkonen on board for this season, Hakkinen does not need to make a decision on his future for a few months yet and the split with Rosberg has no bearing on that decision: "It doesn't have any relevance to the decision," Dennis said."Whether Mika is driving again he doesn't know, and he doesn't have to know for several months. Mika has a contract with the team and the only reason this has become an issue is because Keke and he announced they were separating their commercial relationship."

Hakkinen was managed by Rosberg for thirteen years and the parting of ways was amicable. The Finn may have a contract with McLaren for 2003 but many think there will be no room for him in the team if Coulthard and Raikkonen do well this season.
