Delayed Lotus freight arrives in Abu Dhabi

Lotus’s delayed freight has finally arrived at the Yas Marina circuit ahead of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, meaning the team is on course to get its cars out on track for opening practice.

The absence of team equipment and personnel at the track on Wednesday prompted questions about whether or not the outfit would be participating this weekend.

But on Thursday morning, the team's delayed freight had arrived at the track and staff were busy at work preparing the cars and garages for the final race of the season.

It is unclear why the freight was delayed, but it has come against the backdrop of issues with unpaid bills at a number of races this season.

Lotus is in the final stages of negotiations with French car manufacturer Renault about a takeover of the Enstone-based outfit, to resurrect a works team.

Gerard Lopez, the current owner of Lotus, told Sky last weekend that the deal was all but done.

"I think we are pretty much there with Renault," he said. “I understand that Renault still have some things they need to clear with Formula 1 and FOM, but as far as we are concerned we are pretty much at a deal now."

Renault has said it expects an announcement about its plans to be made imminently.

Nikita Mazepin’s Formula 1 debut at the Bahrain Grand Prix lasted mere corners before he wiped himself out in a shunt, but his financial backing affords him a full season. Back in 1993 though, Marco Apicella was an F1 driver for just 800m before a first corner fracas ended his career. Here’s the story of his very short time at motorsport’s pinnacle.

Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton took victory at the Bahrain Grand Prix despite, for a change, not having the quickest car. But any hopes of developing its W12 to surpass Red Bull's RB16B in terms of outright speed could not have come at a worse time.
