McLaren-Mercedes driver David Coulthard was involved in a plane crash in southern France earlier today (Tuesday).

The LearJet, carrying a pilot, co-pilot and three passengers, developed engine trouble en route from Britain to Nice, and attempted an emergency landing at the Satolas airport near Lyon.

The pilot and co-pilot were fatally injured in the crash, but the passengers, which also included Coulthard's fiancee, Heidi Wichlinski, and his bodyguard, suffered only minor injuries. They were treated by the airport emergency crew, and taken to a hospital in Lyon.

According to the spokesman at the Edouard Herriot hospital, the passengers were mostly shaken up by the incident but not seriously harmed, with bruises the most serious of their injuries. Their condition was not giving cause for concern.

The three passengers were to undergo some additional tests and remain under observation overnight.
