McLaren's David Coulthard has voiced concerns about the speed of the Ferrari F2003-GA, which is due to debut in Spain, saying it could be bad news if it's as fast as suspected. Happy with the current development of last year's MP4-17, McLaren is in no rush to introduce its own 2003 model but Coulthard thinks Ferrari will be hard to beat.

"If they bring out a new car you have got to believe it is quicker and that is not good news," said the Scot. "The underlying pace of the (old) Ferrari is good and if you had to pick your weapons to go into the next battle, you would be hard pushed to bet against Ferrari having a quick single-lap car."

However, despite that, Coulthard added that Ferrari can slack off over a race distance: "But as always in race trim we seem to be the biggest winners in terms of performance and they drop back a bit and so do Williams so we have every reason to be optimistic. I still think the McLaren trend is upwards."

Ferrari has had some reliability issues while testing the new car, which led to its debut being postponed from San Marino to Spain. Coulthard acknowledges it would be silly to risk racing a car that is not ready, just for the sake of it.

"They have done several thousand kilometres testing but there are some issues there," he said. "You hear of it being significantly lighter than previous cars and quite fragile which is why Luca Badoer has had a few shunts. Ferrari know their programme and it would be foolish of them to race the new car just because its new -- and I think it is significant that it was not raced in Imola."
