David Coulthard took to the Czech Republic circuit of Brno this weekend, the first Formula One driver to take a current F1 car to the 5.4km track. The Scot completed twelve laps, his best time being a 1:36.77 which beat the previous record set by a GTP car. The 2001 MP4/16 was to be driven by the winner of a competition run by McLaren sponsors West and Coulthard's visit, as well as to shakedown the chassis for the winner, was to assess the circuit as possible test venue for next year.

"It's certainly a challenging circuit," he said."I think I would need about 30 laps to really find the braking points and really feel comfortable. There is a high percentage of full throttle corners. It's a fast, flowing circuit. As for racing, there's 50 meters of space here, which makes it the widest track in Europe. I know it's easy to say, sitting up here in West overalls, but I think West should definitely be applauded for doing this. It's definitely a unique event and let's hope that there are more."

Also present for the West Race Day event were Mercedes DTM drivers Peter Dumbreck, Bernd Mayalander and Bernd Schneider. Along with McLaren test driver Alex Wurz, the three DTM racers took the competition hopefuls on a trip round the circuit. Thomas Foeldi, a software development engineer from Budapest was the over all winner and drove the McLaren MP4/16 for five laps on Saturday.

"This has to be the best day of my life," said Foeldi after his experience. "The power was fantastic and so were the brakes. Having said that, I didn't really use the grip in the corners. But it was fantastic."
