There was some confusion after qualifying for the Monaco Grand Prix in regard to the starting position of Red Bull's David Coulthard. The Scot had made it through into the top 10 shootout but the stewards deemed that he had hampered Renault's Heikki Kovalainen during the course of the second 15 minute session.

Coulthard's penalty was to have his Q2 times deleted and he was not allowed to take part in the third session. That promoted Honda's Jenson Button into the top 10 and dropped Coulthard down the times to what was thought to be 16th but apparently not.

The official timing screens showed Coulthard as 16th but the FIA results recorded the Red Bull man as 11th. Stewards have now stated that Coulthard will start 13th, behind the Williams of Alex Wurz (11th) and the Toro Rosso of Tonio Liuzzi (12th).

Coulthard protested his innocence. "I didn't know Kovalainen was on a timed lap or else, quite clearly, I would have got out of the way," he said. "I did communicate with the team to find out what was happening with the traffic around me, but there was a misunderstanding so I didn't get the correct information."

The official grid will not be confirmed until Sunday morning.
