David Coulthard has come in for a bit of a pep talk from McLaren managing director Martin Whitmarsh, who says the Scot needs to 'get his form together'. Coulthard has been overshadowed by young teammate Kimi Raikkonen this season, the Finn battling at the front with Michael Schumacher while Coulthard has struggled in qualifying.

"I think we would like David to get his form together," said Whitmarsh. "He is racing well, but there is generally a high standard of driving and you have got to qualify. It is all about driver confidence and how a driver qualifies is a mind game and he has got to get that fixed. He has got to recognise that he can do it, relax and drive instinctively without the analysis."

Whitmarsh thinks Coulthard needs to alter his thinking, saying David's way of approaching things could be different. "David is a very analytical individual and sometimes that is a useful quality but it may not be useful quality when you have got to put it on the line in one lap," Whitmarsh explained.

"You have got to blank out the analysis of each corner and make sure you are fluid and instinctive in the way you do your qualifying lap."

Coulthard eventually went out of the European Grand Prix after following the Renault of Fernando Alonso for some laps. The McLaren spun into the gravel, Coulthard blaming Alonso for braking abruptly and himself having to take evasive action.
