"Imola and here (Austria) obviously I've been weak in terms of only getting fifth place so I need to get my act back together in Monaco and get some good points," he told Reuters. "I was below the pace that I expected I would have here this weekend."

"I never really felt comfortable with the car. Hopefully we can get a good test under our belts and get a feel for the car for Monaco because if it feels like this I don't think I will be able to push."

Coulthard has won twice at Monaco but will have to up his game in qualifying to have a chance of taking victory again. Overtaking is notoriously difficult on the tight Monaco street circuit and a good result in qualifying is essential.

"It's possible if you get the grid position then it can work out so that's what we obviously have to do," said Coulthard. "I would like to see myself back on the podium."

The Scot is currently fifth in the Driver's championship while McLaren team mate Kimi Raikkonen is still leading the championship after finishing second in Austria. Ferrari has overtaken McLaren, by one point, for the top if the leaderboard in the Constructors' standings.
