David Coulthard does not believe that Renault are serious competition to McLaren this year, saying they have only beaten his team once in four races. McLaren are only one point ahead of Renault, while in the battle of the Brits Jenson Button is currently three points ahead of Coulthard after beating the Scot by finishing fifth in the San Marino Grand Prix.

"Renault beat us but they have only done it in one race out of four," Coulthard said. "They have not outqualified us and beaten us only once. I don't know if you can call that serious competition. One swallow does not make a summer. Credit where it's due, Jenson drove a good race but I believe he had a quicker car."

The Scot admits that McLaren couldn't match the speed of Renault in the race: "We were a mile off the pace and in the race Renault had the legs on us," he remarked. "I drove a hard race, it just wasn't at the same pace as everyone else." Coulthard is now twenty nine points behind leader Michael Schumacher and had to suffer the ignominy of being lapped by the reigning champion at Imola.

McLaren have lacked speed and reliability so far this season and Mercedes motorsport boss Norbert Haug is well aware of the fact: "The weekend's results (at Imola) show our current level of performance," said Haug. "We are too slow and everybody in the team knows that we have to improve and work even harder."
