Former world champion Damon Hill thinks David Coutlhard can win the title this year after the Scot's flying start to the season. Coulthard took victory in the Australian Grand Prix after qualifying eleventh on the Saturday and Hill thinks both the Scot and McLaren are looking competitive.

"He (Coulthard) could absolutely be the world champion this year," Hill told BBC radio. "If he can qualify 11th and then come into the pits and come out dead last and still win a race (then he is looking good). It is going to be a very exciting season."

"David has matured a lot. He showed last year that he is a lot more solid than when he was younger. And McLaren looked competitive -- they didn't look nearly as uncompetitive as we thought they would. I don't think Ferrari have the dominance right now."

A little premature to predict winning the title after only one race, perhaps. Coulthard undoubtedly was strong at Albert Park but he benefited from Williams' Juan Pablo Montoya having a spin. "Races like this are unusual races," Coulthard admitted. "It's not the classic straight fight from start to finish and none of us believe Ferrari wouldn't have been the most likely to win that sort of battle."

McLaren did look like it might be a threat to Ferrari, with both Coulthard and Kimi Raikkonen on the podium at the end. However, as Michael Schumacher said, it's a long season yet -- the Albert Park opener provided some surprises and no doubt there will be more to come.
