David Coulthard may have been put a little in the shade this year by Kimi Raikkonen but the Scot is quick to support his McLaren teammate's championship challenge. Raikkonen is seven points behind Michael Schumacher in the Driver's standings and still looks to be the German's main contender for the title.

"Absolutely," Coulthard told reporters when questioned if Raikkonen could still win the championship. "I think he can. He just needs consistent podium finishes and Michael not having those. He had a hard time at Silverstone but still managed to get some reasonable points. We shall see how the coming races play out."

McLaren has yet to confirm Coulthard as a race driver next year and the rumour mill has been in top gear with suggestions as to whom might fill David's seat should his services no longer be required.

However, Coulthard is staying calm: "I know my contractual position," he said. "So it's a question now of waiting until the team are in a position to make an announcement."

McLaren has given no real hints that it is not going to keep Coulthard and Mercedes motorsport director Norbert Haug said keeping both the team's current drivers is the intention. "Whatever you read about it, forget it," he said in regard to the rumours. "It's just not correct. We don't breach anyone's contract -- that's just not right. Personally I do not expect surprises for next year."
