HOUSTON, Jan. 24 /PRNewswire/-- Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE: CPQ) today announced it is teaming up with WilliamsF1 and BMW Team as the principal sponsor and official computer partner. The company's involvement includes providing the technology platform for future Team car design and performance enhancement, race analysis, telemetry and the use of Internet technologies to facilitate real-time decision-making. This sponsorship builds on Compaq's long-standing customer relationship with both WilliamsF1 and BMW in Germany. "As the computing industry pacesetter, sponsorship of the BMW WilliamsF1 Team represents an excellent marketing opportunity for Compaq. It allows us to align our brand values with a high visibility, fast-paced, dynamic global sporting event. This sponsorship enables us to leverage a year-long series of races and establish a strong brand presence with an annual worldwide television audience of more than 50 billion people," said Gabriele Zedlmayer, Vice President Marketing Communications, Compaq Computer EMEA. "Our technology leadership across all fields of computing will add to this team's potential for long-term success. While we recognize the challenges facing any new team entering Formula One, with WilliamsF1 and BMW as partners, we see a bright future ahead," she added. Compaq's NonStop(R) strategy enables companies to be "always up and running" and in the fast-moving world of Formula One, this translates to real- time decision making. Whether or not the car is racing in South America, Australia or Monte Carlo, technicians at the track and others based in the UK and Germany will have all the vital data lap-by-lap, so they can constantly improve race performance. "Harnessing technology to achieve competitive advantage -- both on the track and off -- holds the key to future success in Formula One. We are delighted that Compaq, as a technology leader and innovator, is to be the principal sponsor of the BMW WilliamsF1 Team. This agreement extends and builds on the long-term business relationship in which we have used high performance Compaq systems in our R&D, design and engineering efforts for Formula One racing over many years. This is a partnership that we believe will ultimately prove to be a highly competitive force in the new era of Grand Prix racing," said Frank Williams, Managing Director of WilliamsF1. "BMW welcomes Compaq as a major commercial partner for the BMW WilliamsF1 Team, especially as the two companies share a number of values and goals such as a passion for excellence and the commitment to technology leadership," said Gerhard Berger, BMW Motorsport Director. "Our joint effort to succeed in Formula One will certainly further strengthen the existing relationship and underpin the implementation of countless ideas for co-operation."
