Alex Zanardi has spoken of his desire to race again - and not just any racing, he wants to return to CART.
The Italian nearly lost his life after a high speed crash at the Lausitz circuit in Germany in September 2001 when he was leading the race. Exiting the pitlane he lost control of the car and collided with Alex Tagliani who was doing approx 300kmph. Zanardi survived but lost both legs in the accident that shocked the racing world.
"I have to walk with just the muscles I've got left," he said."There is a particular technique to utilise the mechanical knees I have fitted. Eventually I will be able to get rid of the crutches and probably walk with no outside help and almost look to the outside like a normal person"
Zanardi has been driving a modified car which he explained has helped his recovery greatly and he drives himself on the 600 mile trip between his home in Monaco and the rehabilitation centre in Bologna. Despite many thinking he would never race again, he expressed his desire to return to CART.
"It's one of the things that make me think almost like nothing has happened. To look in the mirror and look at my son sleeping in the back, and talking to my wife, is really very good. I know I won't be able again to do exactly the same things as I did before, but I'm trying very hard to do as many of the things as I was doing before. For me the most important thing, and the objective, is to arrive one day where I say it's my choice whether I race or not. If I reach that point then I'm going to be very happy. To race again and ago back into racing at a different level right now isn't really very interesting. I would like to go back and race the same kind of car I was racing before. It's very difficult, but never say never."
