The KL Minardi Asiatech team enjoyed another weekend of excellent mechanical reliability as drivers Mark Webber and Alex Yoong today ran strongly throughout the 70-lap Canadian Grand Prix on the demanding Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. Both men chose the harder compound Michelin tyre on offer and elected to make only one stop for fuel and tyres.
The strategy turned out to be a good one, the only slight glitch occurring when Yoong experienced a problem engaging his speed limiter and was assessed a 10-second stop-and-go penalty for exceeding the pit-lane limit. The result marks Webber's fourth 11th-place finish in eight starts this season, leading him to dedicate the Montreal race to legendary Australian Rugby Union star, David Campese, a long-time friend and supporter of the young Australian driver, who famously carried the No 11 on his shirt throughout an illustrious playing career.
"This was a positive race for us. I passed several drivers at the start, including Frentzen and McNish, but unfortunately, they blasted back past me on the straight. I was struggling with the first set of tyres with 10 laps to go to the pit stop - the oversteer was so bad, I thought we'd picked up a puncture. After the stop, the car was very good and we were able to push all the way to the finish. The team has again done a brilliant job this weekend. The car ran reliably the whole time and was a credit to the guys. Our turn will come for another good result shortly."
"It is obviously good to finish this Grand Prix. I haven't finished a race for a while, so I'm definitely happy with today's outcome. It was quite a hard race for me, because I didn't have the use of the drink bottle from the beginning. Otherwise, it was uneventful, with the exception of a problem I experienced engaging the pit-lane speed limiter. As a result, I received a 10-second stop-and-go penalty. Generally, though, I'm quite happy with today's outcome."
PAUL STODDART, Team Principal
"Despite a trying weekend fraught with politics, the KL Minardi Asiatech team has been able to enjoy a happy ending to today's Canadian Grand Prix with both its cars taking the chequered flag and yet again proving the reliability of its 2002 package. Adding to the pleasure, we also finished ahead of our main rival. Mark drove another fantastic race, and full credit to Alex, who also ran strongly throughout the event. I'm really proud of the team; they've done an excellent job throughout the weekend."
