Jenson Button topped the times in today's testing session at the Circuit de Catalunya, setting a fastest of 1:17.70 over 87 laps. The Renault driver worked on a Bridgestone tyre programme and evaluating configurations for the 2003 car. Seven teams and nine drivers were on track and the McLaren of Alex Wurz was second quickest, running set up and suspension tests.

Sauber's Felipe Massa took over from Nick Heidfeld and was third fastest. The Brazilian also worked on Bridgestone tyres and continued the aerodynamic testing in readiness for Silverstone. Massa was happy that, as he missed the match, test team boss Jacky Eeckelaert put the result of Brazil's World Cup semi-final against Turkey on his pit board.

McLaren driver David Coulthard was fourth, followed by the Arrows of Enrique Bernoldi who suffered an engine failure in the afternoon. Jordan continued their preparation for the British Grand Prix with Takuma Sato who concentrated on chassis set-up and tyres while Honda worked on engine development.

The two Williams test drivers, Marc Gene and Antonia Pizzonia, were seventh and ninth fastest respectively, sandwiching the Jaguar of Eddie Irvine. There has been no official comment as yet from Jaguar about the performance of the revised R3 but Irvine said prior to this testing session that it would be a crucial week for the team. The new chassis is set to arrive in Barcelona this week from an earlier shakedown in Belgium.
