Lewis Hamilton will start on pole position for the British Grand Prix after he beat his Mercedes Formula 1 teammate Nico Rosberg to the top spot in a qualifying session that was marred by track limit offences.

Hamilton, who broke his own Silverstone lap record with a 1m29.243s in Q2, was the better of the two Mercedes drivers after their first runs in the final segment. But the British driver had his time deleted by the stewards because he ran wide at Copse corner on that lap.

Earlier in the day, the teams had been warned that any drivers going wide at Copse, Stowe or Club would automatically have their times deleted, and Hamilton therefore needed to put in another lap to claim pole.

But the world champion emerged to blitz his way around Silverstone in 1m29.287s and ultimately beat Rosberg to pole by 0.319s. It was Hamilton’s third British GP pole in four years and his fourth overall.

Speaking after the session, Hamilton said: “[It was] not the cleanest qualifying session. I think we had really good pace in Q1; I ran a bit wide at Turn 3 and lost about fourth tenths there.

“Then after that I had really good pace and the penultimate lap was a very good lap. Unfortunately it was taken away – I touched the kerb and it just pulled me further. It didn’t feel like I was running wide but the car bottomed and bounced just outside the line.

“[There was] a lot of pressure for that last lap but I was just sitting in the garage and I knew that I couldn’t let the guys down, because on the first lap I had. The second lap wasn’t as good but I was making sure I was cautious and making sure I got that lap in.”

Max Verstappen had his final lap deleted for exceeding track limits, but his first Q3 lap was good enough for third on the grid, one place in front of the other Red Bull driver Daniel Ricciardo, who will therefore start behind a teammate for the first time in 2016.

Kimi Raikkonen had a scruffy Q2 but ultimately ended the session in fifth, just ahead of Sebastian Vettel in the second Ferrari. But Vettel will start the race down in 11th place because the Scuderia was forced to change his gearbox after it was damaged in FP3.

Valtteri Bottas finished seventh for Williams just ahead of Toro Rosso’s Carlos Sainz and Force India’s Nico Hulkenberg.

Fernando Alonso rounded out the top ten for McLaren as the Spaniard was another driver to have a time deleted for exceeding track limits when he ran wide at Stowe on his best lap in Q3, which resulted in him dropping down from eighth.

Sergio Perez was knocked out by a late flurry of drivers going faster at the end of Q2 and the Force India driver will start 11th, one place in front of Williams’ Felipe Massa.

Romain Grosjean

Romain Grosjean beat his Haas F1 teammate Esteban Gutierrez to 13th, with Daniil Kvyat ending up 15th in the second Toro Rosso.

Kevin Magnussen was the slowest Q2 runner and he will start 16th for Renault. The Danish driver had lost a Q1 lap time for running wide at the first corner and he then appeared to exceed track limits a number of times on his final lap in that segment.

Jenson Button, who had been confined to 17th at the very end of Q1, had therefore started walking down the pitlane to go and get weighed by the FIA, but was told by McLaren to run back to the garage and climb back into his car. Q2 got underway without a clear sign of who would be eliminated but it was eventually confirmed that the McLaren driver was out and Magnussen was through to the second section of qualifying.

Jolyon Palmer had his first Q1 lap deleted for running wide at Copse and although the Renault driver got out again, he could only manage 18th. The Briton has not made it through to Q2 since the opening race of the 2016 season.

Rio Haryanto beat Pascal Wehrlein to 19th place, which makes it 5-5 in the inter-Manor qualifying fight, as Felipe Nasr finished 21st for Sauber.

Marcus Ericsson

Marcus Ericsson did not take part in qualifying after he was sent to hospital following his heavy crash in FP3. The Swedish driver went wide at Stowe and lost the rear of his car, which sent him across the track and into the inside barrier at high speed.
