While Michael Schumacher dominated the British Grand Prix, his Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro team-mate was probably the most entertaining driver on the Silverstone track, as he went from last place on the grid to finish second. "My race at Silverstone was definitely good fun," agreed Rubens Barrichello. "Of course, it helps when you are driving a car that performs well. I think that more than anything, at the end of the race, I was proud of the way I had driven. I had to keep things very calm and steady. It would have been very easy to lose the nose off the car in a passing move, or generally been too aggressive. I kept moving forward, but I never really gave any thought to what position I might finish. I had an open mind about it and did not set myself a target."
The Brazilian took just 19 laps to go from the back to second place and he had no cause for complaint about any of the drivers he overtook on the way. "Everyone I came to pass gave me a good battle, but in a very fair way, though of course some cars were easier to pass than others," he said. "My chances of overtaking were increased with the rain coming, as I had a tyre that really suited the situation."
Rubens' skill at the wheel was complemented by good support from the Ferrari pit-crew. "The team also did a great job with the pit stops, especially as a couple of times I pitted right behind Michael on the same lap," explained the Brazilian. "Initially, I thought I could not come in because he was there, but then I was called in on the radio. I was on the edge of missing the entrance to the pit lane, but it worked well. The team has practiced bringing both cars in together and it is a good strategy. The entire weekend had gone very well for me, apart from the problem on the formation lap. All in all, I would say it was one of my better drives, but not my best, because there have been races in my early career where I had to drive very hard in inferior equipment."
