Flavio Briatore, Managing Director of the Renault F1 Team, interpreted the results of qualifying and explained the possible scenarios that may unfold during the race.
With their fourth and eighth places on the grid, Fernando and Jarno exceeded the Team's expectations, and they now hope to be fighting for a significant number of points during the Canadian Grand Prix. "Our extra testing on Friday allowed us to work through our set-up programme in dry conditions, while our competitors only had 15 minutes' running in the dry during yesterday's warm-up," explains Flavio. "We are therefore starting from an excellent position today and, with the knowledge that we have a good quantity of fuel on board, we are looking strong."
The R23's top speed didn't disappoint yesterday. "With a top speed of 326 km/h, we put in a good performance," continues Flavio. "That should mean we don't get overtaken down the straights. And Schumacher? He doesn't worry us. Thanks to our launch control, Fernando should get past him before the first corner. He then can't afford any mistakes if we want a podium finish."
What kind of strategy can we expect today? "I think everybody has chosen to stop twice," says Flavio. "Having said that, the rain meant we weren't able to analyse our rivals' performance was we usually do. We think the first stops will come around lap 18, but the window could go as far as lap 30. Certain teams were certainly worried about rain today, and chose to run their cars with a little more fuel."
And finally, track conditions must be considered. "They will be difficult, because the rain has cleaned the track completely," concludes Flavio. "Lap times will certainly improve throughout in the race, but the tyres may suffer a little during the first stint."
