A SOLID DAY'S WORK
SAO PAULO, BRAZIL, March 29, 2002 - The KL Minardi Asiatech team today kicked off its preparations for this Sunday's Grand Prix of Brazil in highly productive style. Drivers Mark Webber and Alex Yoong completed an impressive number of laps around the bumpy 4.309-km Circuit Jose Carlos Pace, near Sao Paulo, in the process accumulating considerable useful performance data that will be used to fine-tune the cars for tomorrow's qualifying session. Yoong lost about 20 minutes at the end of the morning session after a spin, but then recovered with a strong afternoon run, while Webber enjoyed two trouble-free sessions. Both drivers completed the day's assigned technical programmes.
MARK WEBBER Position: 20th Fastest lap: 1 min 17.714 secs
"It was good to be in a Formula One car for the first time here at Interlagos. We got through some good work and look forward to improving further tomorrow. I like the track a lot. It's different from most other F1 circuits because of its anti-clockwise direction, and it's bumpy in places, but it's also challenging, which is something any race driver relishes."
ALEX YOONG Position: 22nd Fastest lap: 1 min 18.426 secs
"It's been a productive day, despite a clutch problem in the first session that meant the engine stalled after I had a harmless spin. We lost time as a result, but then made good progress this afternoon. I feel very optimistic for tomorrow, as I know there is a lot more to come, both from the car and from me."
PAUL STODDART, Team Principal
"This was a useful day at the office with both cars and drivers completing full programmes in preparation for tomorrow's qualifying session. Alex lost 0.6 sec in the final sector of his last flying lap this afternoon and, if not for that, both drivers would have been less than three seconds off the fastest time registered today. We're pleased with that, considering the heavy fuel loads being run in order to work on race set-up. We now look forward to a solid qualifying session tomorrow."
THE ASIATECH VIEW
This has been a hard-working and rewarding day's practice for Asiatech. In the extremely hot conditions prevailing at the Interlagos circuit, the KL Minardi Asiatech drivers covered a substantial aggregate number of laps. The information gathered, working through their respective engineers' programmes, will prove very valuable for tomorrow's qualifying.
