Ford of Europe has today (Friday 11 April) expressed its satisfaction at the decision of motor racing's governing body, the FIA, to declare Jordan Ford driver Giancarlo Fisichella the winner of last weekend's Brazilian Grand Prix. The reclassification of the results, following what was found to be a timekeeping error at the event, means that Ford has taken its first Formula One victory since the European Grand Prix in 1999, and has increased its record tally of wins in the sport to 176.
Speaking from his office in Cologne, Ford of Europe's President and COO Martin Leach said: "We are absolutely delighted with this result. Giancarlo Fisichella drove superbly under extraordinary circumstances to take home such an incredible win and he deserves great credit and recognition. This result provides a great boost for everyone at Jordan Grand Prix and at Ford, especially in the context of what is our centennial year at Ford Motor Company."
The outcome of the FIA hearing in Paris today means that Fisichella has finally secured his maiden victory after 110 grand prix starts. It also marks the first win of the new partnership between Jordan Grand Prix and Ford, which first hit the track at this year's Australian Grand Prix.
The success of the Jordan Ford relationship in achieving this victory in just the third race of the 2003 season has exceeded all expectations, but the partnership is still in its early days, and the team readily acknowledges the mature driving performance from Fisichella in a difficult and extraordinary race that delivered the first victory from the Ford Cosworth RS engine in the new Jordan EJ13 car.
Ford returned to Formula One this year when Ford of Europe began its latest association with the Jordan Grand Prix team as part of a new chapter in its racing career. The famous Blue Oval and Cosworth name have been carried on the sides of the Jordan cars of Fisichella and Ralph Firman.
The decision to forge the partnership with Jordan Grand Prix was taken as Ford of Europe begins a product-led resurgence. The Formula One activities compliment those of Ford's efforts in the FIA World Rally Championship and allow the Company to promote its engineering excellence and the brand values of products such as its sporty road cars, like the recently launched Focus RS. In the longer term, the activities will endorse the eventual return of the Cosworth brand to Ford's vehicle line-up.
