Blundell heads south to continue rally GB preparations.
22nd October 2002... Mark Blundell, former F1 driver, is turning his driving skills to rallying aiming to enter the Network Q Rally of Great Britain next month. In preparation for his debut in the event with the MG XPower team, Blundell is taking on an intensive schedule of testing and competition to ensure he is ready for the challenge of the Network Q, the final round of the World Rally Championship. The Bulldog Rally last weekend was the location for Blundell's first rally in the MG ZR and with successful completion of this event, he moves on this coming weekend to The Michelin South of England Tempest Stages, held in Aldershot and Farnborough in Hampshire, to continue gaining competitive track experience.
"After a great day at the Bulldog Rally, I've now got the bit between my teeth and I'm relishing the challenge of the Tempest Stages," says Blundell. "By the end of the day, I was gaining more and more confidence in the car and myself, so I'm looking to building on this in the Tempest. It's been a steep learning curve, but having achieved my objective of completing all six stages last week, I'm going into this event with the grounding and experience to start pushing harder with the MG ZR and get the maximum potential from this great little car."
"Rallying is a new departure for me in my racing career, but one that I am thoroughly enjoying. I've had to adapt my driving style and even had to learn to change a wheel quickly, although I don't think I managed to do this as quickly as the F1 mechanics! It's mentally and physically challenging, exciting and full of action. I'm looking forward to getting in my MG ZR again and trying out the rally tracks in Aldershot and Farnborough."
Blundell and co-driver, Bob McKenzie, a motorsport journalist, will take part in the Michelin South of England Tempest Stages on Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th October in the MG Sport & Racing MG ZR, ahead of entering the Network Q Rally of Great Britain, 14th -- 17th November in Cardiff.
