Bite-size tech: Ferrari SF16-H differing front wing configurations

Ferrari is toying with a couple of front wing confingurations in Japan that, at the first glance, might appear identical.

However, on closer inspection, it is clear they have a different inner footplate design that will certainly provide a different aerodynamic effect.

In the side-by-side comparison above, we can see that the slots which curve over the ‘tunnel’ (highlighted in yellow, left) toward the endplate have been reduced in length on the other specification wing (right).

This relatively small change will affect the way in which airflow circulates around the wing and, most importantly, how the tunnel behaves, altering the spillage of air around the front tyre.

This will not only have a direct impact but consequently decide the behaviour of other aerodynamic flow structures downstream, too.
