Heinz-Harald Frentzen's first drive of the Sauber C21 at Silverstone today ended with a bang as the German crashed heavily on his last laps of the day. It was late afternoon, just before 5pm, when the Sauber hit the barriers somewhere on the first half of the circuit. Details are as yet unknown but Motorsport.com photographer Mark Gledhill was at Silverstone.

"It was on the first part of the track, I didn't see it," he said. "But the car was heavily damaged. The left side of the chassis and the rear end were basically missing but the front and the cockpit were intact. Frentzen was taken to the medical centre for a check up. It may have been a tyre problem as the mechanics very quickly hid what was left of them from view."

Frentzen was testing to see how comfortable he was in the Sauber with a view to replacing Felipe Massa for the US Grand Prix at Indianapolis. Mark later confirmed that the German was not badly hurt, just some bruising.
